Golf.com recently featured the new Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal golf course at the Diamante resort in Cabo San Lucas,Mexico, which is in the final stages of construction and scheduled to open by mid 2014. The golf legend is reportedly taking a hands on approach to the new course, spending countless hours out in the field collaborating with design associates and Diamante execs to ensure that every bunker edge and green has been crafted to suit Woods’ critical eye.
“On this sun-splashed morning on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula,[Woods is] a veritable chatterbox, energized by the fact that one of his visions for a course is at long last becoming a reality,” writes Golf.com. “El Cardonal – the second layout at Diamante, joining Davis Love III’s Dunes course,[which is] No. 52 in our World Top 100.”
The Diamante course will be Woods’ first foray into design, making it one of the biggest openings in recent years – a fact that is sure to provide a boost for everything in the region – from travel bookings to Cabo San Lucas real estate. As an architect,Woods is striving to create a course that is playable for all levels of golfers and has already begun to demonstrate his own unique architectural aesthetic. On the third green at El Cardonal, for example, his team built a ramp to the left of and a bit behind the green, which provides a backstop.
“I don’t want people to lose a dozen balls when they play our course,” Woods told Golf.com. “Pinehurst is a great example of a course that’s tough for us but playable for everybody else. It gets players thinking, with options around the greens. We want lots of variety.”
Other key points to El Cardonal’s design include a focus on strategy, fairness, visibility and fun. In addition,he is blending his own plans with the property’s natural landscape to create variety so each of the holes plays differently. For example, the course begins with a slightly downhill par 5 measuring just over 550 yards and finishes strong with the downhill par-4 18th measuring just over 500 yards, framed by the shining waters of the Pacific Ocean, which provide a scenic backdrop.
