Cancun Travel Guide - Transportation

18 August, 2013

Getting around while staying in Cancun is easier than ever before, thanks to the wide variety of buses, taxis, shuttles, rental cars and ferries that are readily available from the moment you arrive at the ultra-modern Cancun International Airport. In fact, many resorts and hotels will even provide free shuttle service to and from the airport and the Hotel Zone,or the concierge will be happy to call a taxi or help you locate a suitable rental car.

Still, many visitors prefer to take the bus to get around the region and see all that Cancun real estate has to offer, since they are cheaper than taxis and typically readily available, even when traveling to and from nightclubs after dark. In Cancun’s famed Hotel Zone, buses run every few minutes and travelers are permitted to disembark anywhere there is a blue parada (stop) sign, making this a cheap, easy way to travel. First and second-class buses are also a great way to get around the entire region, including to the many nearby cultural sites that are located throughout the Riviera Maya and inland on the Yucatan Peninsula. These buses are always air conditioned, but the first class buses will also have a bathroom and will show movies for entertainment while traveling.

A taxi is the best way to get back and forth from the Cancun International Airport if your accommodations do not offer a direct shuttle service. Taking a cab is also generally somewhat faster and more direct,so if you don’t want to stop at various pick up and drop off points,it may make sense to spring for a taxi. In addition, many taxis in Cancun,Playa del Carmen,Tulum and other areas throughout the Riviera Maya will accept credit cards, which reduces the need to carry cash. Just be sure to ask how much the trip will be prior to taking off, especially if your taxi does not have a built-in meter. Most of the taxis parked in front of the hotels will have a fixed price for various popular destinations.

Car Rental

When renting a car in Cancun,it may be necessary to take a short shuttle ride from the airport to the rental location.  Also,be sure to check out the company thoroughly online before making a reservation and expect to pay around $40 per day,or a couple of hundred bucks per week, depending on the type of vehicle, etc. Renting a car makes it a snap to get around, and the roads throughout Cancun and the Riviera Maya are quite safe for travel. Just be sure to keep an eye on your gas gauge and don’t let it get too low, since you will be unfamiliar with the nearest places to fill up at first. Also,it’s important to point out that renting a car is really helpful only if you are planning to travel outside of Cancun, since getting around downtown and in the Hotel Zone is a breeze.

If you would like to explore the surrounding islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, there are several ferry departure points that are located directly in Cancun’s Hotel Zone. The ride to Isla Mujeres takes about 25 minutes, while Cozumel is about 45 minutes one-way.
