Yahoo! News Features Mexico’s Most Fabulous Beaches

18 July, 2013

It’s no secret that Mexico is one of the world’s top vacation destinations, thanks in large part to its amazing beaches, but it is also home to the friendliest people, best cuisine and most fantastic variety of water sports that can be found anywhere on earth.

“On Mexico’s beaches,I’ve been sporty, social,or had my solitude. I’ve had the friendliest service in the world, the best house made guacamole, and left with killer suntans,” writes Drew Limsky for the Yahoo! News Travel Blog.  “Beach vacations don’t get much better than this.”

Cancun tops Yahoo!’s list of Mexico’s Beautiful Beaches,in part because it often serves as the gateway to traveling in Mexico for many first-time visitors and is the nation’s most popular destination. In addition, most visitors to Cancun and the nearby Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Caribbean Sea find themselves coming back again and again.

“It simply boasts the gold standard of beaches,” writes Limsky.

Cabo San Lucas comes next on the list, named the “go-to place” for Los Angeles residents. At just a two-hour flight from LA,it’s easy to see why this Pacific Coast gem is also a favorite getaway for Hollywood A-Listers. Cabo is followed by the Costa Maya, which can be found back along Mexico’s Caribbean coast on the Yucatán Peninsula. Described as “remote and unspoiled,” there is a busy cruise ship terminal located here near the town of Mahahual, which is home to a variety of chic boutique hotels, sidewalk cafes and – you guessed it – a gorgeous beach.

The beach at Zihuatanejo on Mexico’s Pacific Coast also made the list, thanks to the amazing array of water sports that are available here, including boat rides, kayaking, parasailing, scuba diving, waterskiing and windsurfing. In addition, the luxurious beach and resorts at Mayakoba were chosen due to the impressive array of water sports and amenities that are available in the Riviera Maya region. Located just 40 miles south of Cancun,Mayakoba offers easy access to the world’s second largest barrier reef, which lies just offshore in the Caribbean Sea.

Also south of Cancun, the ancient town of Tulum earned a spot on this exclusive list, thanks in part to its prime location near Playa del Carmen and also because of the Mayan pyramid that stands sentry here, overlooking the soft, white sand beach. First occupied more than 1,000 years ago, today Tulum real estate is truly some of Mexico’s finest and this beach town is fast becoming the region’s hottest destination.

Finally,Puerto Vallarta rounds out this list, thanks in part to its rich history and reputation as the favorite destination in years gone by among members of “Old Hollywood,” such as Ava Gardner,Deborah Kerr,Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Today,Puerto Vallarta, which lies on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, has retained its historic charm while also becoming an important arts and cultural community with a “long, wide, gently curving” beachfront that is perfect for swimming.
