Canada’s Sunwing Travel to Invest $250 Million in Mexico’s Riviera Maya

30 June, 2013

Canadian investors from Sunwing Travel Group have announced plans to build a $250 million hotel in Puerto Morelos, which is part of Mexico’s famed Riviera Maya and borders the Mexican Caribbean in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Sunwing Travel Group CEO Stephen Hunter and vice president Lawrence Elliot revealed the plan to build the hotel during a meeting Monday in Toronto with Mexican Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu,” reports Fox News. “The hotel and tour company plans to build the 1,250-room Royalton Riviera Cancun next year in Puerto Morelos,a city on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.”

Sunwing Travel is one of Canada’s largest airline and tour operators,as well as a major travel agency that is reportedly the number one provider of vacation packages for Canadian travelers heading to Mexico and the Riviera Maya. This new hotel is one of the first for Sunwing, which sent more than 330,000 Canadian travelers to Mexico last year.

The company’s most requested destinations in Mexico are Cabo San Lucas,Cancun,Cozumel,Puerto Vallarta, the Riviera Maya and the Riviera Nayarit. This latest investment announcement is yet another sign of the confidence that foreign investors have in Mexico’s economy and tourism sector. In addition, current President Enrique Peña Nieto has already made enormous strides in creating an environment that will encourage even more direct foreign investment in Mexico.

In fact,Mexico presents an ideal opportunity for travel corporations such as Sunwing, thanks to the nation’s strong and growing economy, fabulous vacation destinations and welcoming business climate. According to Ruiz Massieu,Mexico’s booming tourism sector is currently working to encourage even more competition, which will provide an added boost for anyone who owns Riviera Maya real estate.

Tourism numbers in Mexico have already increased dramatically throughout the first half of 2013,with more than 4.3 million international visitors during the first quarter alone. These numbers are expected to increase as Mexico continues to improve its infrastructure, making it easier than ever to travel between the many coastal towns and resorts that are located in its most popular destinations.

Puerto Morelos is an ideal location for Sunwing Travel’s new hotel,in part because it is conveniently located just south of Cancun, which is home to a bustling international airport. In addition,it lies just north of Tulum, which will soon be home to the region’s second major airport.
