Travelzoo Names Cancun Riviera Maya "Wow Deal Destination" for 2011

13 September, 2012

Travelzoo has announced that Mexico is expected to be one of the top 5 best travel value destinations for 2011.  This designation is specifically for the area in and around the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and the Riviera Maya.  Travelzoo calls resort areas that win this award,‘Wow Deal Destinations’ and markets them heavily.

Like past years, there will always be a significant segment of the market that craves the best deals available.  Travelzoo’s deal experts have lined up luxury resorts for 60% off and even week-long cruises for 50% off the regular fare.  In short,2011 is shaping up to be the year of great deals in the Yucatan.

International tourism is already up by more than 20% over last year according to the Mexican Tourism Board, despite some negative press recently in the north of the country.  According to World Tourism Organization statistics,Mexico is currently the number 10 destination for international travelers and the government is gunning for a top 5 position by 2018.

Cancun real estate and the Riviera Maya real estate (centered around Playa Del Carmen, but extending south all the way to Tulum and north nearly to Cancun) are rated the top two ‘safe places’ to visit in Mexico.

In response to this high rating, several airlines have increased service to the area.  Virgin America,Continental Airlines and Southwest Airlines have all added more flights to Cancun.  U.S. Airways and United Airlines are upping flights into Mexico City.

The resorts are really sharpening their pencils when it comes to deals.  Travelzoo reports that there is aggressive deal making, such as a 5-night all-inclusive travel package for $599 per person.  This is more than $600 savings off the regular price.  It is just this kind of deal that allows last minute travelers to benefit.  Of course, those who plan ahead can also swing some terrific deals.

With increased tourism, the Mexico real estate market in the Yucatan Peninsula is also seeing increased activity,as vacationers realize how beautiful the country is and start looking for either a retirement home or vacation condominium.  Mexico’s exceptional beaches are the biggest draw, but the easy access to ancient civilizations is also a major factor in tourism.  The over the top luxury of some of the all-inclusive hotels is very attractive too.  There are many deals to be had for those who look, even during the normally pricier winter months.
