New Flights from China and US to Mexico

13 September, 2012

Virgin America,along with
China's Hainan Airlines,Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific and Mexico's Aeromexico,
have all announced intentions this month to open up new flights into and out of
Mexico. Virgin America has asked the US Department of Transportation for
approval to add flights to the Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta from its major
hub in San Francisco, and is actively pursuing approval from regulators in
Mexico as well. In addition, separate talks are also in the works to establish
a direct flight that would connect Mexico City and Beijing.

“We've seen a strong demand for
travel to our Mexican destinations and we're looking forward to giving our
flyers another world-class leisure option,” said Virgin America CEO David Cush
in a recent press release. “We're proud to be growing and offering travelers a
very unique flight experience at a time when most airlines are shrinking their
schedules and reducing the amenities provided to fliers.” The new flight to
Puerto Vallarta would mark Virgin's third destination in Mexico, with others
already heading regularly into Cancun and Los Cabos.

“China is one of the main priorities
for Mexico,” said Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, the director of the Tourism Promotion
Council of Mexico's Tourism Ministry,“There are a number of opportunities that
we are working on in order to improve the connectivity between Mexico and
China, and we are sure that if we can get a direct flight between Mexico City
and Beijing,we will see a major increase in the number of tourism arrivals.”

Lopez also revealed that that talks are in the works to begin another
flight into Mexico from Hong Kong that will come from San Francisco or Los
Angeles, while his office is also in discussions with Aeromexico to explore the
possibility of adding a flight to Beijing.
