Mexico Tourism Drives ASUR Airport Expansion

13 September, 2012

Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste
(ASUR),has recently announced plans to invest a large sum of money in a major
food, beverage and retail expansion at the Cancun International Airport,as
well as at its other smaller airports, which can be found at Huatulco,Oaxaca,
Veracruz and Villahermosa. According to an article in The Moodie Report online,
Manuel Gutierrez Sola, who is ASUR's commercial director, announced that
eateries such as Bubba Gump,California Pizza Kitchen,Johnny Rockets and
Starbucks are among a few of the brands that are already scheduled to appear in
the airports after the renovations are complete.

In addition,he revealed that
retail stores such as Harley Davidson,Los Cinco Soles,Sunglass Island and
Pineda Covalin will move in to the airports, vastly improving the selection of
easily accessible stores that are available for travelers who are passing
through these hubs. The renovations are scheduled to be completed by late 2012
and were largely spurred by the continued positive trend and overall increase
in tourism that Mexico is experiencing so far in 2011.

“The Mexican tourism sector is recovering,”
Gutierrez told The Moodie Report. “The official target is that this year will
see an influx of 26 million people, between tourists staying at our
destinations, cruise visitors and border visitors staying less than 24-hours in
the country.”

If reached or surpassed, this will mean a return to tourism numbers that
have not been seen since before the financial crisis of 2008,and it will take
Mexico up to number five on the world's list of the most popular tourist
destinations. According to Asur, commercial revenue in its airports has
increased by more than 7 percent in the first quarter of 2011,while the amount
of revenue per passenger has already grown by nearly 8 percent this year.
