Riviera Maya Real Estate To Benefit From Ferry Review

12 September, 2012

Owners and renters of Riviera Maya real estateare set to benefit from a review of maritime transport in the state of Quintana Roo.

Mexico's Federal Competition Commission (CFC) confirmed to local press, this week, that it is looking into the operation of ferries between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

The review is also thought to include the service near Cancun, between Puerto Juarez and Isla Mujeres.

Many locals hope this will pave the way for lower prices and more frequent departures, which would bring benefits to Riviera Maya real estate owners who use the transport and to the guests that rent vacation properties.

The CFC is looking into contracts, agreements and arrangements between the providers of commercial and passenger maritime services, seeking any conditions that may fix, raise or manipulate ticket prices.

The two operators of the Playa del Carmen-Cozumel route, Mexico Waterjets and Ultramar, have more than doubled their prices in the last 6 years and many locals complain that the service is not frequent enough, with gaps of two hours between some ferry departures.

No date has been confirmed yet for the completion or publication of the CFC's findings.
