Plans have been revived to make Puerto Morelos,on the Riviera Maya near Cancun,an alcaldía - a legal entity with its own mayor
and political power.
Residents of the small fishing town,largely
untouched by the development of tourism on the Riviera Maya all around it,
formally called for the change at a recent council meeting.
If the town
succeeds in increasing its power and independence,it may follow in the
footsteps of Tulum's first mayor and the economic
development that's followed,benefitting the price of local Riviera Maya real estate
